At this time of the year I thought it beneficial to mention some matters of mutual interest to all members of this magnificent hockey club.
Firstly, I should thank all the members who have been involved in our continuous efforts to successfully conduct the Annual City v Country Championships on behalf of Hockey NSW and our U/15 Association Carnival last Sunday. Not only were they successful but they involved many members in working in the canteen, BBQ catering and behind the scenes.
Congratulations to all male and female club members in the running of these events about which there has been nothing but praise for your efforts, not only from HNSW office but, more importantly, the greater NSW hockey community.
It will be a huge task again when we conduct the HNSW Men’s Open Championships over the June Long Weekend (11th, 12th and 13th June) and the Ladies Masters Tournament in July.
Some of our stalwarts will not be available for at least one of these events and it is hoped, with every confidence, their absence will be covered – a call for even more volunteers!!!!!
On the playing front we again seem to be dominant in both Sydney Premier League and Sydney Womens Hockey League competitions. The ladies competition on Saturday keeps rolling on under the super guidance of Sue & Wayne Cotterill and others.
Our Junior Teams (U/11, U/13 and U/15) are continuing to improve thanks to Kim and Damon Brooks and the Friday afternoon free Minkey is becoming stronger and more popular with the efforts of Nathan Gilbert and his cohort of 1st grade assistants.
Members might be aware that with the assistance of a substantial grant from the NSW Government the lights have now been fully replaced on the sand synthetic field and are better than any of the other club field lighting in Sydney.
Our next step, in time, is to resurface the sand field with a water base turf…..but that will be a large cost to the club, not quite within our means as yet …but who knows!
On a personal note we are blessed with people within the club who have extraordinary skills and unique personalities, a few of which are:-
Sue and Wayne Cotterill – organisers of the highest order and vision
John Walzak – our Secretary who just doesn’t miss a trick whether it is Moorebank Liverpool, Met South West, S.E.H.A, Sydney Hockey Association or HNSW.
Nathan Gilbert and Nigel Croke – when not playing hockey (for the club, NSW or Australia) are coaching at a very high level and standard.
Stacey Gilbert – our newly appointed Treasurer.
Emma Cotterill and Robyn Bow – always there when needed and tireless club members.
Wayne Thorn and Canteen & BBQ Crew – not only run the famous (or is it infamous?) club BBQ and Canteen but even spend nights sleeping at the club to ensure security and continuity. (Not too sure about security especially later at night!!)
In conclusion, I again congratulate all members for their efforts now and in the future. Your efforts have built a club that has, in my 40 years with the club, no peer in Australia as far as quality of member and standard of facilities.
